How To Apply Liquid Eyeliner

For even the most experienced makeup professional, liquid eyeliner can become quite tricky. Liquid eyeliner comes in a bottle that looks like ink, and you do have to apply it with a brush. It also is quite dark and bold, so it is important to feel confident in your liquid eyeliner application.

Most often, it is only ideal to use liquid eyeliner on the top eyelashes, unless you would like very dark eye makeup. It is also important not to get it into your eye. To balance out your eye makeup look, it is best to use an eyeshadow or eye pencil applied on the lower lash line. If you do use liquid liner on your upper and lower lash line, then try to use as thin of a line as possible so that your look is not too harsh. Most often, liquid eyeliner is the most flattering when it is only applied on the upper lash line to keep your eyes looking fresh and alert.

The best method to use to apply your liquid eyeliner is to paint it on in dashes instead of one continuous line. This will prevent you from having any unevenness in a long line because you can apply it little by little. It is best to use small application motions, and then work to connect the whole line after you have finished. If you do want your line to be thicker than what you have applied, you can add more to your liquid eyeliner little by little. Remember, less is often more, so for your everyday wear, it is much better to apply a less dramatic look.

One main benefit to using liquid eyeliner is that you can use it for creative eye makeup applications, like a cat eye or winged look. One of the best ways to flatter any eye shape with liquid eyeliner is to start out thin on the inner corner of your eye, and thicken the liquid eyeliner application as you reach the outer corner of your eye. The easiest way to create a cat eye in your liquid eyeliner application is to slightly flick the applicator brush at the outer corner of your eye.

As a point of reference, it is very helpful to place your elbow on the counter when you are applying this type of liquid eyeliner so that your application will be steadier. Liquid eyeliner is also not ideal for a smoky eye because that requires a smudged and messy look. This is an eyeliner method that is ideal for a very precise application, especially if you would like a cat eye or classic 50s makeup look. When you learned to master your liquid eyeliner application, it is a very helpful trick to have up your sleeve. It is also a great way to open up small eyes when you can apply it in a thin line very close to the lash line for a thickening effect.

If anyone has trouble

If anyone has trouble applying the liquid liner that comes in a bottle, try a felt-tip liner. There's a great brand called Styli-Style that has a 24 Hour liner. It comes in pencil, automatic pencil, and felt tip, all of which are very easy to apply and don't smudge, even on oily skin. Their felt tip liner is super simple to work with and makes a great 'cat eye'. Another good one to try is by Mattify Cosmetics - they have a powder mineral shadow that, when used with a damp liner brush, makes a beautiful liner. This one takes a little more practice than the felt tip liner, but the results are worth it!
